Fixed Term Contract

We're currently seeking Sample Handlers based in Glasgow, to work in a new COVID-19 Lighthouse Testing, as part of the NHS Test and Trace programme.

As well as playing a vital role in supporting society's return to a more normal way of life by helping to break the chains of COVID-19 transmission, you will also gain invaluable experience and exposure to some of the country's most highly skilled individuals in the scientific community.

Your Responsibilities:

As a Sample Handler, you will be responsible for:

  • Taking receipt of clinical samples from sample sorting room at specified times and book them into the LLiG
  • Removal of clinical samples from exterior packaging (unboxing)
  • Working in a controlled area, with appropriate PPE measures, to remove clinical sample tubes from clinical safety bags (unbagging)
  • Transferring clinical sample tubes to racks for transfer to the laboratory
  • Responsible for the movement and tracking of samples from designated sample receiving and sample processing areas to the clinical laboratory
  • Identifying samples that are not suitable for testing due to damage, leakage etc
  • Remove packaging waste from the laboratory to the sample sorting room by a specified time, and label for returns in time for Royal Mail pickup
  • Basic planning and organisation of workload to ensure efficient service delivery
  • Carry out routine and straightforward record keeping
  • Assess customer needs and respond flexibly to demand
  • Ensure relevant Standard Operating Procedures, Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations and other relevant regulations and procedures are followed and well-documented according to specification
  • Undertake any other tasks related to the activities of the LLiG, as directed by the management team

Your Experience:

This role requires does not require previous experience; however, it is essential that you can:

  • Ability to follow specific instructions
  • Ability to work productively within a team
  • Understanding of relevant health and safety policies and procedures relative to the role
  • Good attention to detail
  • A courteous manner
  • Good communication skills

Education:

Ability to demonstrate the competencies required to undertake the duties associated with this level of post having acquired the necessary knowledge and skills in a similar role Or: Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 4 in English and Mathematics (National 4) or equivalent, and some experience working in a similar role

In Return:

As well as a competitive rate of pay, equivalent of Band 2 temp work you will initially be employed as a temp worker and if successful in duration will be offered a Fixed Term Contract based on Grade 3 role within the university which is £18,212, there is also a 20% shift allowance for early shifts.

This role will require flexibility as the shifts include day, evening, and weekend shifts. The shift pattern is a 4 on 4 off rotation, working 3am - 1pm and to include weekends..
