We're currently seeking Newcastle-based Operation Managers to work within a state of the art, high output diagnostics laboratory environment as part of the UK's NHS Test and Trace programme.

Your responsibilities:

You will be responsible for the operational management of staff within COVID Hub Laboratory. You will provide specialised scientific knowledge and to work as a member of the team to assess, plan and contribute to the provision of a specialised service coordinate and undertake competency assessment and training of technical skills to staff, supported by senior scientific staff in each section of the laboratory. You will ensure laboratory diagnostic tests and procedures are performed accurately and efficiently.

Your experience:

This role requires you to have extensive experience in a senior scientific role with supervisory responsibilities. You should have extensive experience and in depth specialist knowledge of Microbiology, Virology or Molecular Genetics.

In order to be successful, you'll need the following skills and qualifications:


Education:

  • BSc in Biomedical Science or equivalent
  • Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) registration
  • MSc, FIBMS or equivalent level of knowledge

Experience:

  • Previous experience in a senior scientific role with supervisory responsibilities
  • Extensive experience and in depth specialist knowledge of Microbiology, Virology or Molecular Genetics. Promotes and partakes in Continuous Professional Development
  • Firm understanding of UKAS ISO15189 Laboratory accreditation requirements

In addition, the following education and experience are also desirable but not mandatory:

Education:

  • Management qualification or experience.

Experience:

  • Research and development experience
  • Experience of and training in undertaking staff appraisals

Please note that as an Operation Manager, you are not required to have extensive experience across all of the desirable competencies described above, but applicants are expected to have relevant experience for the competency which they would oversee

As well as a competitive rate of pay (with a 20% uplift applied for night working and end of contract bonus), you'll receive comprehensive training on relevant lab procedures and equipment.
