We're currently seeking Mobile Lab Technician based in and around the Birmingham to work within a state of the art, high output diagnostics laboratory environment as part of the UK's NHS Test and Trace programme.

Your responsibilities:

As an Lab Technician you will be undertaking Covid testing up to but not including the point of validation, with exception of auto-authorized procedures and working to standard operating procedures. You will use scientific knowledge to recognise incorrect results and take action to correct errors. You will be expected to perform laboratory tests requiring a high degree of manual dexterity.

You will perform quality control as appropriate and report any out of consensus results to Biomedical Scientist staff for investigation. Additionally, you will be responsible for monitoring and performing daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance of analysers and other laboratory equipment, ensuring that logs are completed. Check the safety and functioning of all equipment perform simple troubleshooting and report malfunctions to Hub Scientist

As an Lab Technician you will monitor stock levels of various reagents and to liaise with other staff members to ensure the maintenance of stock levels. You will maintain a clean, safe environment, ensuring adherence to the approved standards of cleanliness, hygiene, and infection control.

You will ensure that the Standard Operating Procedures for own work area are kept up to date and displayed appropriately. Use word processing and spread sheet packages to produce audit reports and laboratory data.

You will be expected to participate in the training of new biomedical assistants and associate practitioners. Supervise biomedical assistants and less experienced staff, allocating work, training, etc. You will actively participate in governance activities to ensure the highest standards of care and business conduct. This will ensure on-going compliance with local and national policies as required for UKAS standard as well as performing audits as required by Senior Scientific staff

As a Lab Technician you will co-operate fully in adhering to the policies and procedures with regard to health and safety. This includes taking reasonable care to prevent injury to themselves or others who may be affected by their acts or omissions and immediately reporting to their manager any shortcomings in health and safety procedures and practice You will be expected to report any accidents to their manager as early as possible and submit a completed accident/incident form and wearing protective clothing and equipment appropriately where provide.

Your experience:

In order to be successful in the role of Mobile Lab Technician, you'll need the following education, experience and skills:

Education:

  • Appropriate Level 5 Qualification or equivalent e.g. Foundation degree or equivalent in Biomedical Science or BSc (Hons) degree in a relevant science subject.
  • IBMS Certificate of achievement Level 2 (Higher)

Experience:

  • At least 12 months UK hospital laboratory experience covering duties explained in J.D.
  • Word processing, spread sheets and laboratory information system experience.
  • Aware of health and safety and confidentiality issues

Skills:

In addition, the following education and experience are also desirable but not mandatory:

Education:

  • Keyboard or IT qualification.

Experience:

  • Experience of working in a Clinical Microbiology Laboratory

Skills:

  • Supervisory skills
  • Knowledge and understanding of clinical microbiology laboratory tests
  • Able to work under pressure or to deadlines.
  • Previous experience of using pipettes to aliquot small volumes of liquid
  • Awareness of patient or customer issues.
