We're currently seeking Mobile Lab Assistants based in and around the Midlands and Cambridgeshire, to work within a state of the art, high output diagnostics laboratory environment as part of the UK's NHS Test and Trace programme.

As well as playing a vital role in supporting society's return to a more normal way of life by helping to break the chains of COVID-19 transmission, you will also gain invaluable experience and exposure to some of the country's most highly skilled individuals in the scientific community.

You will be joining a supportive environment and will be provided with training and accreditation for the role and processes you are required to undertake.

Your responsibilities:

As a Lab Assistant, you'll play a vital part in supporting a smooth running of the laboratory on a day-to-day basis and will be working closely with Lab Technicians to support them with receipt and sample preparations. You will be performing basic laboratory analytical assays or techniques according to Standard Operating Procedures and complete basic laboratory equipment cleaning and maintenance.

You will be responsible for loading samples onto centrifuges, pre-analytical automation, or other sample preparation equipment. This will include performing clerical tasks including data input and use of laboratory IT system, filing, archiving, retrieving samples and dispatch samples to referral sites as appropriate.

As a Lab Assistant you will perform sample reception duties including receiving, sorting, labelling, bar coding and racking of samples on arrival and carrying out general house-keeping duties including safe disposal of waste, general cleaning and tidying, stock management and stores duties.

Ideally, you would have familiarity in working within either an academic, clinical or industrial laboratory setting (however, this is not essential), as you'll be involved with maintaining outstanding worklists and general housekeeping lab duties.

Your experience:

In order to be successful in the role of a Lab Assistant, you'll need the following education, experience and skills:

Education:

  • Good standard of education, including GCSE Maths or English (or equivalent)

Experience:

  • Experience of working in a team.

  • IT / Keyboard Skills

Skills:

  • Ability to write legibly and unambiguously.

  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely by telephone and in person.

  • Ability to understand and act upon basic instructions.

  • Ability to work accurately and methodically following written protocols.

  • Ability to prioritise own work and others.

  • Ability to carry out lifting and handling of laboratory items.

  • Desire to work in a laboratory environment.

  • Enthusiasm to learn.

  • Willingness to work flexibly

  • IT / Keyboard Skills

In addition, the following education and experience are also desirable but not mandatory:

Education:

  • IT or keyboard qualification.

Experience:

  • Experience using and programming automated liquid platforms

Skills:

  • General house-keeping duties.

  • Awareness of H&S issues.

  • Evidence of previous work involving accuracy and attention to detail.

  • Evidence of ability to work under pressure or to a deadline.
