Technical Support Engineer

Who we are: The Rosalind Franklin Laboratory (RFL) is publicly owned and operated by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) and is at the heart of the UK’s response to managing the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

RFL is the largest facility of its kind in the UK, and one of the largest in Europe. Using cutting-edge technology, the lab has processed millions of PCR tests since opening in June 2021. The lab continues to play a vital role in stopping the transmission of COVID-19, as well as ensuring the nation can respond quickly and at greater scale to deal with pandemics and other future health threats.

In this role you will have the opportunity to: provide Subject Matter Expert (SME) support and will be responsible for resolving technical issues for all Laboratory equipment and the wider engineering systems in the facility. You will also be responsible for preventative and reactive maintenance as well as being the first point of escalation for the Laboratory Equipment Technicians.

Your Responsibilities:

  • To carry out reliability calculations on all Laboratory equipment and Engineering systems in the facility

  • To resolving or escalate complex technical issues on all Laboratory equipment

  • Resolving relative non-conformance engineering issues raise on Q-pulse

  • To work closely on the validation process, enabling equipment usage following repair (OQ, PQ)

  • To initiate continuous improvement and apply in Engineering services

  • To provide technical engineering coaching for Laboratory Equipment Technicians

  • Ensure Health and Safety standards are met

  • To research, diagnose, troubleshoot and identify solutions to resolve technical issues

  • Ensure effective prioritising while managing several open issues at one time

  • To prepare accurate, thorough and timely reports

  • Ensure adherence to KPIs, amending where necessary

  • Ensure regular calibration of equipment

 

To succeed in this role, you should have the following skills & experience:

  • Professional accreditation with a recognised European accrediting body e.g (IET, IMechE, IEEE)

  • Extensive experience working with robotics systems and/or Automated RNA extraction systems

  • Experience of working as a hands-on field service engineer

  • Industrial automation system experience

  • Understanding of Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) protocol

  • Experience of troubleshooting and maintaining sensors, encoders and axis control

  • A comprehensive understanding of Health and Safety protocols in a Laboratory environment

  • Experience in technical report writing

  • Professional accreditation with a recognised European accrediting body e.g (IET, IMechE, IEEE)

 

Education:

  • Degree (or equivalent) in the Engineering or Science field

In return we offer you: You will receive a minimum 18-month contract with opportunity to go permanent and competitive rate of pay £41,723. Additional benefits include Company Sick Pay and Overtime Pay.
