We're currently seeking Plymouth-based Laboratory Shift Supervisors across PCR, Accessioning, Extraction, and Sign Out activities to work within a state of the art, high output diagnostics laboratory environment as part of the UK's NHS Test and Trace programme.

Your responsibilities:

  • The supervision and support of a team carrying RNA extraction on high throughput COVID 10 test samples.
  • To be responsible for the efficient running of a designated section of the laboratory by acting as technical and supervisory lead in the Extraction section of the Laboratory.
  • To ensure the department maintains the required standards by necessary training and supervision of all staff in the allocated section and other areas of the laboratory if appropriate.
  • To take responsibility for the management and coordination of a defined section of the department with specific reference to the implementation and maintenance of Health & Safety issues, Quality Systems, including all accreditation standards and Personnel matters.
  • To assist the Laboratory Shift Manager & Lead Scientist in the management of the laboratory
  • The post holder will direct high complexity laboratory operations including decision making, response to problems, identifying errors and taking corrective action during their allocated shift.
  • The post holder will directly manage a group of Biomedical Scientists and support staff , contributing to good employee relationships and providing for staff development. The post holder will be responsible for performing regular performance reviews.

Your experience:

Successful candidates need to have:

  • Education to BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Sciences or equivalent qualification
  • An understanding of the meaning of results to enable authorisation and appropriate action in dealing with abnormal or unusual results
  • A working knowledge and practical application of the departments IT systems
  • Experience in a laboratory preferably in molecular or microbiology.
  • Team leadership skills
  • Computer literacy, with a working knowledge of Microsoft Word & Excel
  • Experience in writing Standard Operating Procedures

  • Experience of UKAS ISO 15189 Accreditation, audit and management
