Lab operates on a 24/7 basis (Candidates need to be flexible)

Job Summary

The job holder will as part of a new COVID-19 Lighthouse Testing facility, forming part of NHS Test and Trace and managed by Berkshire and Surrey Pathology Services (BSPS). BSPS is a large and established pathology network operating across Royal Berkshire, Royal Surrey, Frimley Health and Ashford and St Peter's Hospitals NHS Foundation Trusts.

The post holder will:

  • Receive delivery vehicles onto site
  • Unload and scan consignments of boxed Covid-19 testing samples and laboratory consumables
  • Unpack sealed Covid-19 testing sample bags and prepare them for delivery to the laboratory
  • Drive logistics vehicles to transport samples, consumables and waste to and from the laboratory

Dispose of waste packing materials from deliveries and waste from the laboratory, as required

PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES

Logistics

  • To assist in logistics activity as instructed, following Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) under the supervision of the COVID-19 Lighthouse Laboratory Logistics Supervisors
  • Directing vehicles which arrive on site to deliver COVID-19 testing samples and laboratory consumables
  • Receipt of COVID-19 testing samples and laboratory consumables into the warehouse from transport services

  • Unloading and scanning consignment boxes and checking written consignment information
  • Entry of consignment information into computer systems
  • Manoeuvring of boxes and crates
  • Unpacking sealed COVID-19 testing sample bags from the consignment boxes and preparing them for delivery to the laboratory
  • Preparing supplies of consumables for delivery to the laboratory
  • Driving logistics vehicles to transport samples, consumables and waste to and from the laboratory (where the post holder has a full driving licence)
  • Following SOPs, undertake waste disposal of laboratory samples and used consumables
  • To keep the Logistics Supervisor informed of all matters regarding logistics procedures and help with the smooth running of the department, to minimise errors and maximise efficiency through agreed priorities and to achieve testing targets.
  • Assist in monitoring stock control of consumables held in stores
  • Regular and thorough cleaning of equipment and work spaces, complying with SOPs and specific COVID safety requirements

Role Responsibilities

  • Works to achieve competencies across the repertoire of the department as appropriate to grade
  • Communicates effectively with other staff groups both internal and external, including transport and laboratory staff
  • Ensures efficient use of resources and is aware of stock levels and rotation
  • Ensures appropriate stock levels are maintained in own area of operation
  • Maintains a clean and safe working environment. This may include disposal of clinical waste and decontamination processes.
  • Aware of Clinical Governance, Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) and local Health and Safety policies, including use of Personal Protective Equipment, reporting problems, errors or breaches to the Logistics Supervisor
  • Basic query handling, including answering telephone calls and dealing with messages and enquiries relating to delivery and stock

Other Responsibilities

  • To receive all visitors to the department in a professional and courteous manner, complying with Trust security arrangements
  • Demonstrates excellent personal communication and team working skills
  • Complies with the requirement to practice within information governance, data protection and confidentiality guidelines
  • Works as part of a team to ensure that departmental performance targets are met by continually assessing priority of work
  • Participates in the Trust Personal Development Programme and works towards identified development needs
  • Attend all mandatory training courses
  • Attends and participates in BSPS, Lighthouse Laboratory and Trust staff meetings as appropriate and demonstrates a positive attitude to these

  • Provides training support and assistance to newly appointed staff as appropriate (including the demonstration of procedures to less experienced staff)
