In this role you will have the opportunity to:

Purpose of Role:

  • Support the H&S Lead in Health & Safety matters on the Rosalind Franklin Laboratory site.

Your Accountabilities & Responsibilities

Key Accountabilities:

  • Maintain compliance of the Health & Safety processes and documentation at Rosalind Franklin Laboratory to meet the requirements of the regulations and the Health and Safety Executive.
  • Drive continuous improvements in Health & Safety at Rosalind Franklin Laboratory.
  • Work with the operations staff and management to ensure that all aspects of Health & Safety are maintained: COSHH documentation, MSDS documents, Risk Assessments and all other Health & Safety records.
  • Act as Audit Lead for any Health & Safety audits on the site.
  • Work with QA and QC staff as required to support these functions on the site.
  • Ensure that a schedule of internal H&S audits is planned and performed; ensure that all observations arising are addressed.
  • Liaise with the Managers to ensure the timely completion of all health & safety documentation.
  • Ensure that all personnel are trained to an appropriate level to comply with all necessary health & safety requirements.
  • Ensure that Health & Safety KPIs are collected and reported to Site Management Team as required.
  • At all times, adopt a safe behaviour by exercising due regard for the health and safety of yourself, colleagues and clients, in line with the Company's policies and procedures.

Current Challenges and Opportunities:

  • Support the development and implementation of a new H&S management system to ensure that Regulatory requirements are met.
  • Develop and implement SOPs etc.
  • Helping to train staff
  • Helping to implement a "right first time" culture throughout the site

  • To contribute to the development, growth, strategic direction and operational effectiveness of the Rosalind Franklin Laboratory.
  • To ensure the full responsibilities of the post are delivered in a way that reflects the high standards, vision and values of the Rosalind Franklin Laboratory.

  • To actively promote the Rosalind Franklin Laboratory with agencies, partners, stakeholders, sector bodies, schools and the local community, developing effective partnerships with all bodies.
  • To proactively promote excellence in Health and Safety, EDI and Safeguarding and to promote and support the well-being of all colleagues.
  • To complete and remain up to date with all mandatory training, seeking continuous professional development where appropriate.
  • To participate positively in the Rosalind Franklin Laboratory's performance review scheme as updated from time to time.
  • To undertake any other duties as may be reasonably required across the RFL in the interests of efficient and effective working

To succeed in this role, you should have the following skills & experience:

  • Degree qualified or minimum 5yrs vocational experience
  • Significant experience of operating within Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems of operational laboratory environments.
  • Tech-IOSH, Grad-IOSH would be a preference
  • Experience in liaising with internal and external stakeholders on all areas of health & Safety.
  • Experience in conducting audits and hosting external auditors.
  • Experience of maintaining documents and working within laboratories accredited to current or recent ISO standards.
  • Ability to solve complex problems under pressure and use initiative to promptly make informed decisions
  • Able to work effectively as a member of a team demonstrating excellent communication and team work skills
  • Able to act as a role model demonstrating a respectful and inclusive attitude towards colleagues
  • Able to deal with people and situations in a patient, objective manner
  • Demonstrate a genuine commitment to uphold and promote equal opportunities and diversity
