We're currently seeking Facilities Technician's based in Milton Keynes to work within a state of the art, high output diagnostics laboratory environment as part of the UK's NHS Test and Trace programme.

Your responsibilities:

As a Facilities Technician, you must have a proactive approach to building maintenance. You will be responsible for carrying out routine checks and inspection of facilities and equipment including fault finding, problem solving and minor repairs such as Air Handling Units and Air Conditioning units, electrical works, including all minor electrical installation & repairs, planned and executed in such a way as to minimise risk or inconvenience to others

You will be providing assistance to the Facilities Manager in the maintenance of the facility whilst liaising with and supporting the Laboratory First Line Engineer in fixing minor breakdowns and issues with the laboratory and scientific equipment. As a Facilities Technician you will be expected to contact external contractors as required and accompany/assist them whilst on site.

On a daily basis you will be ensuring there are adequate supplies of spares on site for commonly used parts or those with a long lead time and delivering a full and timely reporting of all major breakdowns, significant problems, repair

requirements, delays or machine down time to relevant personnel.

You will be responsible for various administrative tasks such as setting up conference rooms for meetings, helping with office moves, responding to emails and/or face to face requests from staff to undertake repairs, order supplies, and troubleshoot building issues.

Approximately once a month, you will need to travel to the UK Biocentre Oxford site to undertake facilities work and assisting with all aspects of the upkeep of the grounds, roadways and car parks.

Your experience:

In order to be successful in the role of Laboratory Technical Support Officer you'll need the following education, experience and skills:


  • City & Guilds 2365 (at least Level 3 or above)
  • GCSE or equivalent in Maths' and English


  • Minimum of 2 years' experience in a similar role.
  • Basic understanding of health and safety and its application to the working environment.


  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to understand and follow instructions and procedures.
  • Ability to work well as part of a team.
  • Basic understanding of Microsoft Office suite of software (Excel, Word, Outlook and the Internet).
  • A knowledge of manual handling and the ability lift to lift and carry objects

In addition, the following education and experience are also desirable but not mandatory:


  • IPAF License.


  • Experience of facilities work within a scientific or medical field.
  • Plumbing and/or carpentry experience.
  • Experience of working with Liquid Nitrogen (LN2) Storage tanks.


  • Familiarity with working towards ISO standards.
  • Knowledge of relevant Health & Safety requirements for example COSHH.
